Tips to Protect Yourself From Scammers Online and Over the Phone

The rise of technology has also brought an increase in internet and telephone scams, making it easier for criminals to deceive and steal from unsuspecting victims. As a community, it's important that we take steps to protect ourselves from these scams.

Here are some tips to help prevent you from becoming the victim of internet and telephone scams:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited calls or emails from unfamiliar individuals or organizations.
  • Do not provide personal information, such as social security numbers, bank account numbers, or passwords, over the phone or the internet.
  • Be wary of any calls or emails claiming that you have won a prize or are in trouble with the law. Legitimate organizations do not typically communicate in this manner.
  • Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown sources. These could contain malware or viruses.
  • If you receive a call or email that you suspect is a scam, hang up or delete the message immediately and do not respond.
  • If you have fallen victim to a scam, report it to the police and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Remember, scammers are experts at tricking people into giving away their personal information. By being vigilant and aware of these tactics, you can protect yourself and your hard-earned money.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact your Dixon Police Department at 707-678-7070.
