Dixon Police Department Reminds Riders: Helmets Save Lives – Be Smart, Stay Safe

The Dixon Police Department responded to a concerning collision this morning involving a juvenile on an electric scooter and a motor vehicle. The incident occurred at approximately 8:29 a.m. during the busy morning commute at the intersection of West A Street and North Washington Street.

The juvenile rider, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained a head injury and was transported to the hospital for treatment. This incident serves as a stark reminder: helmets save lives.

As electric scooters continue to rise in popularity, so do incidents of preventable injuries. The Dixon Police Department urges parents, guardians, and young riders to prioritize safety and understand the laws governing e-scooter use.

Safety First: Tips for Scooter Riders

  1. Always wear a helmet  It’s the law for minors and could save your life.
  2. Ride responsibly – Stay on the right side of the road and move with traffic.
  3. Avoid distractions – Keep phones and headphones away when riding.
  4. Follow the rules – Obey traffic signs, lights, and signals.
  5. Know where you can ride – Sidewalks are off-limits for e-scooters; stick to bike lanes.

Key California Vehicle Codes for E-Scooters

  • CVC 21235: Riders must have a valid Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License.
  • CVC 21235: Helmets are required for all minors operating e-scooters.
  • CVC 22411: The maximum speed limit for e-scooters is 15 mph.
  • CVC 21229: E-scooters must stay in bike lanes or approved trails – no riding on sidewalks.
  • CVC 21235: E-scooters are for solo riders only – no passengers allowed.

Parents: A Call to Action

In September, Dixon Police issued a warning to parents about the dangers to children on scooter. We’re increasing the warning to a plea: PLEASE HELP US PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN. We ask all parents to take a moment today to talk with their children about e-scooter safety. A quick conversation could prevent a tragedy. Ensure they understand the laws, wear proper protective gear, and ride responsibly. In almost all recent cases, the rider of the scooter was at fault in the collision.
